1. Introduction
In general, Year 2000 (Y2K) problems may originate from the following sources:
- From the hardware or firmware level;
- From the operating system level;
- From the application level;
2. The MicroBanker Application Level
At the application level, MicroBanker Y2K compliance depends on the MicroBanker version that is being used:
- SRTE versions after February 1997 are Y2K compliant, earlier versions are not. Users who use a version with a MICROBNK.EXE or MBNKGLAE.EXE file dated before February 1997 must upgrade to the current compliant version (SRTE 2.5). Upgrades can be ordered from Pekka.Hussi@fao.org for US$400 per upgrade license.
- Y2K Compliance of EXTE versions depends not only on the date of the core routines, but also on whether the customized routines have been customized in such a way that they are Y2K compliant. The only way to determine that is by contacting the international support provider who customized and installed the system. A number of EXTE users have already successfully tested their MB systems by simulating operations up to the year 2001.
3. Hardware and Operating System Levels
Because MicroBanker has its own workflow control and therefore its own date control, MicroBanker itself is "insulated" from Y2K problems that may otherwise arise from hardware or operating system level.
Therefore, as long as your computer system, and operating system, keep functioning, MicroBanker should continue to run correctly on it, IF you use a Y2K compliant version of MicroBanker!!.
The MicroBanker workflow and dates are controlled through the Calendar file which is maintained by the system manager and through various fields in other files representing dates. The insulation of MicroBanker from Y2K problems of the hardware or operating system levels is completed by the way that MicroBanker stores dates internally. Most dates are stored in numeric form. The day number 0 thereby represents 1 January 1900, day number 1 represents 2 January 1900 etc. and the day number 36524 represents 1 January 2000.
